Adbe Lightroom

Godox

1) How did you start as a Wedding photographer / What attracted you to this side of the profession?

I started when a friend’s mum was getting married and they took a chance on me, knowing I had only shot film as a hobby up until then! I didn’t actually have any prior interest in weddings in particular, but as a psychologist I have always been interested in people, and human emotion. I was also interested in street photography so a wedding feels a little bit like shooting street photography… where no one gets angry at you!

2) Approximately how many weddings do you shoot each year?

Nowadays I average about 40 weddings a year, having gone above that number I’m choosing to limit myself to nearer 35, I find too many over that number means I don’t have much time to enjoy summer weekends, and I’m hoping to cut back on weddings to allow myself more time to explore my creativity, which in turn I will inject back into my wedding photography

3) How do people most commonly hear of you? {e.g. recommendation from venues, referrals from previous clients, print advertising, online advertising, internet searches, other}

I get a lot of my work through previous client referrals, and I have stopped most advertising although I am on the directories for a few wedding blogs that I like and support. People sometimes find me through google as well, although I am guilty of not really making any effort into my SEO!!!

4) What is your equipment?

*cameras; Fujifilm x-T2

*Lenses; 16mmF/1.4, 23mmF/1.4 (*Favorite), 56mmF/1.2

*Software; I use LR to edit!

*Others; Love toe godox flash system, really invaluable for Fujifilm shooters

5) What do you think the most important thing to be a successful wedding photographer is?

I think success as a wedding photographer is being able to get clients you love working for and being able to shoot in a style that totally works for you, so I think the most important thing to be successful is to commit to shooting in your own style and not caring about the norms of society or the wedding world.

6) What is the strongest advantage of being a Wedding photographer for you?

I get to see people on a really happy day when everyone is in a great mood, every day at work feels different and interesting for me! It’s a real privilege to be able to be a part of someone’s memories that will stay with them for a lifetime

7) What is the most hardship to be as a wedding photographer in the UK?

You miss a lot of Saturday fun times with friends, and in my case missed being a bridesmaid at a friend’s wedding!

8) What is your own ‘individuality’?

I like to combine a rather 2d cartoon compositional style characterized by rigid lines and shapes with a sense of humour, either literally in the guests or to shoot small whimsical things that take my fancy!

 9) Are you interested in Japanese wedding photography?

I must admit I had never looked at Japanese wedding photography before even though I absolutely love your country and am planning to visit next Spring! Not to mention I love the food so much I name my photography packages after my favourite sushi! My cousin is married to a Japanese woman and I remember being fascinated by the traditional outfits, but I was quite young at the time and I don’t think the ceremony contained any particular Japanese traditions. I have always embraced weddings and marriages from cultures different to my own, so I would be interested in learning more about Japanese weddings and the wedding photography scene!

10) Can you feel any differences between British & Japanese?

I have the impression that Japanese wedding photography contains more static poses, and also seem to use wider lenses in portrait orientation, I find it’s rare you’ll see a British wedding photographer using a super wide outside of the dancefloor, but to be honest I think some of this is more because I am personally so heavily surrounded by British documentary and “alternative” wedding photography. Our editing is less light, I feel like British wedding photography looks a bit darker.

Thanks a lot!
